Transformative Journal by Sashneeta a/p S Rajoo_U2003135 (Team B)

I registered in this GIG1005 Social Engagement course since it is one of the recommended course for this semester and it was mentioned of being the last semester to offer it. I was not sure about what we were required to do in this course at first but right after the first meeting with our supervisor, Dr Zalfa, I managed to get a better understanding on the flow of the course. In group 6 itself, we were divided into smaller groups of five and I was in Team B with my four other teammates (Roketah, Phavinna, Santiya and Jian Jian). Soon, we got along well, even though we have never met before and not long after that we started discussing on the project. We finally decided to conduct a free virtual accounting class for form 5 students.

I was always been an introvert person and rarely participated in group activities that involved organizing events. I was afraid from the thought of being a facilitator during the event as I have only taught one person a time before but now, I had to teach a group of more than twenty students on the topic Disposal of Non-current Asset. I was worried that I would perform poorly as this would be the first time teaching a group of students to help them understand a topic perfectly . On the actual event day, I was nervous, but I did my best to teach the students. By the end of the discussion, I managed to answer all the students’ questions and the students responded that they understood the content taught. This has increased my confidence level to present and interact with a group of people. It was fruitful and satisfying when I realized that I was able to help the students who were having a hard time due to the pandemic to prepare for their examination.

The event was a total success thanks to the effort put in by all the teammates and guidance provided by Dr Zalfa. I felt grateful that I could work in a team and contribute towards the event’s success. This would only be the second time I took part in organizing an event, but I managed to learn a lot from it. I personally noticed a lot of improvement in my communication and teamwork skills, and I also gained other knowledge. I barely had the idea on what should necessarily be on the slides but with the comments given by Dr Zalfa, I managed to make the necessary improvements and come up with better teaching slides. Overall, I find that all the experience, skills and knowledge that I have obtained from conducting this event throughout this Social Engagement course important and useful for me in the future for other upcoming events.
